1 John 3:16 [Message] This is how we’ve come to understand and experience love: Christ sacrificed his life for us. This is why we ought to live sacrificially for our fellow believers, and not just be out for ourselves.
1 John 3:16 [J.B. Phillips] We know and, to some extent realize, the love of God for us because Christ expressed it in laying down his life for us. We must in turn express our love by laying down our lives for those who are our brothers.
1 John 3:16 [GWT] We understand what love is when we realize that Christ gave his life for us. That means we must give our lives for other believers.

Two of the version above translated the word in the verse as “ought” and two of the versions translated the word as “must”
