Ephesians 6:13 [ESV] Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
Ephesians 6:13 [Message] Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s all over but the shouting you’ll still be on your feet.
Take the whole armor of God
With the end of one year upon us and the coming of a new one what a verse to reflect on. We don’t know what today will bring yet alone what the new year hold in store. But let’s claim the verse as a promise and as instruction.
The promise that the whole armor of God will sustain me.
The instruction, use it.
In Ignatius’ Epistle to Polycarp, we read: Let your baptism abide as your shield; your faith as your helmets; your love as your spear; your patience as your whole armor. Let your good works be your savings
Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle; he is my steadfast love and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield and he in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me. Ps. 144:1
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
I don’t know what today entails, and have no guess about tomorrow.
But I know who stands with me, who stand for me.
Allow me to stand firm!
