# 10 – DON’T GET CAUGHT UP IN THE DO’S AND DON’T
Do I eat this? Don’t eat that? Is this allowed? What about this? My bad – ordered a soda with lunch and forgot, I’m just drinking water while fasting. Or find yourself drinking coffee before you wake up – that doesn’t count right? Here’s the deal at the end of the day – did you spend more time with God than you do on “any given day”! We “fast” to know Him better. It’s simply called, “TIME SPEND!” – Get to know Him, read your Bible and pray.
# 9 “Christian spiritually has more to do with what we receive than what we achieve.” – Gary Thomas [Thirsting for God]
The more we thirst [ie. Hunger]; the more we trust.
The more we trust; the less life becomes about us.
The less life is about us, the more life is about the rest of us.
The more we receive, the more we have to give away.
# 8 BE INTENTIONAL – Know going in why you are fasting.
1] 2 Peter 1:5 “Make every effort to add to your faith…” To be able to think past salvation to a deeper, more meaningful walk with God. 1
2] Keeping first things first, instead of defining my life by how much ministry goes out, I want to focus oh how much of Christ’s presence comes in. Devotion, leads to spontaneous service 1
3] Making my prayer life more about others than about myself.
# 7 IT AIN’T OVER TIL IT’S OVER – Before you ever start a fast there are a few things you want to do.
1] Write out a game plan.
How long are you going to fast?
What are you going to eat?
Are you going to give up something other than food?
2] Share your game plan with someone
3] Let’s just do it! [Like to think I stole this one from the Holy Spirit, not Nike]
STAY THE COURSE, IT AIN’T OVER IT’S OVER!
# 6 IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU – It’s about what God is going to do in you, and through you.
#5 HANG IN THERE!!!!
Woke up this morning with cravings: French toast, French Roast and a fine cigar for later. Know that the temptations will come. HANG IN THERE:
# 4: Think of water as your best friend – it really helps to have it around.
Yesterday, was one of those days, you’ll probably have one too. I was feeling sorry for myself. I was hungry and my cravings were showing up. I wasn’t just thinking about foods that I enjoy eating; I think I was smelling some of them. Everything sounded, or looked good. I saw my wife with some cheese and crackers, I just wanted a little, just one bite. A Carl’s Jr. commercial almost put me over the edge.
What to do?
Water and prayer or prayer and water – It’s what fasting is all about! Embrace it! Worship!
# 3: EMBRACE THE CRAVINGS. – 16 days and my cravings are changing everyday. This morning I woke I just wishing for a “piece” of toast. EMBRACE IT! The cravings remind us to pray. The cravings remind us to crave after God.
# 2: IF YOU BREAK YOUR FAST – DON’T STOP FASTING
#1: DON’T FAST ALONE! Do it with someone else, or with a group of people.
Seek the accountability and the encouragement. Be an encourager!
