PICTURE IT! Mark 4: 35-41 [NLT] – Jesus Calms the Storm
35 As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” 36 So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). 37 But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. 38 Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” 39 When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40 Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!”
Put yourself in the story as each of the characters. With which character do you most relate?
I relate to probably any one of the disciples, actually I don’t see myself running to Jesus for help. I’d be one of the disciples that is trying to bail the water out of the boat, I’d be “trimming the sails”, I’d be throwing non-essentials over board, I’d be busy trying to save everyone, I’d forget that the savior is sleeping in my very boat!
Be a disciple. Has Jesus ever led you into a storm? Does it ever seem like he is asleep in the storm?
Jesus probably has led me into a storm or two, I’m not smart enough during the storm to be thinking about who put me in the center of it. I have a tendency to hold on for dear life instead of asking for help. It’s not that I feel like Jesus is sleeping during the storms that come my way, it’s more like I forget that He is there is the mist of it with me.
Be in one of the other boats [verse 36]: Have you ever been caught up in someone else’s storm?
I’ve been caught up in other people’s storms more times than I can count. It’s curious to me, how I’m so quick to point others to Jesus, and fail to recognize his presence during my own storms. I can see myself in one of the other boats, shouting, “WAKE UP JESUS!, LET JESUS HELP!” Why do I see him better at a distance, than I do up close and personal?
APPLY IT! How does this passage apply to your life and what will you do about it?
Jesus is always with me, I need to call on him always; on sunny day, cloudy days, windy days, rainy days, and stormy days. All the days of my life!
Having a bit of hard time believing that you were sleeping. Oh, I think your eyes were shut. But I think you were well aware of what was going on. I think you were probably smirking a little bit. And I think the longer it took them to call to you, the more the smirk turned to sadness, “will they ever learn?” Will I ever learn?
