40 DITW – JOURNAL – DAY # 14

Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man [Mark 7:31-37]

31 Jesus left Tyre and went up to Sidon before going back to the Sea of Galilee and the region of the Ten Towns. 32 A deaf man with a speech impediment was brought to him, and the people begged Jesus to lay his hands on the man to heal him. 33 Jesus led him away from the crowd so they could be alone. He put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then, spitting on his own fingers, he touched the man’s tongue. 34 Looking up to heaven, he sighed and said, “Ephphatha,” which means, “Be opened!” 35 Instantly the man could hear perfectly, and his tongue was freed so he could speak plainly! 36 Jesus told the crowd not to tell anyone, but the more he told them not to, the more they spread the news. 37 They were completely amazed and said again and again, “Everything he does is wonderful. He even makes the deaf to hear and gives speech to those who cannot speak.”

PICTURE IT! Put yourself in the story as each of the characters. With which character do you most relate?

I’d like to think that I relate to the people that brought the deaf and mute man to Jesus. I want to constantly be looking for ways to Share Jesus! These people who at the end of the day where saying: “Everything he does is wonderful,” and were completely amazed. That’s who I want to be, that is who I’m becoming.

Be the deaf and mute man.

Oh I can relate to the deaf and mute man. In need of friends, in need of a healer, in need of a savior, deaf to spiritual truth and mumbling at best.

Be one of the man’s friends.

Taking a friend to Jesus, is there a better friend?

APPLY IT! How does this passage apply to your life and what will you do about it?

In Christian circles we hear talk about “being Jesus” to people. This story reminded me that I’m a poor substitute for Jesus. Bringing friends to the real deal is better than pretending. I want to be one of those people that tells more and more people about Jesus. I want to be one of those people that proclaims; “Everything He does is wonderful.” I want to be one of those people that “are completely amazed!”

PRAYER

Father,

Make me, “one of those people”!
