Reflecting Faith

2013 Read the Bible in a Year – Today’s Readings: Numbers 14-16 / Luke 7

Only Son

While reading the Scriptures this morning, I almost missed it. I’d finished reading and was wondering what it must have been like to be apart of the crowd that morning as friends and family were walking out of the town of Nain in a funeral procession and Jesus and a large crowd following him were walking into town. What caused Jesus’ compassion that day? Had his eyes met the eyes of a grieving mother or was it what he knew, that no one had to tell him. That’s what I almost missed. Luke records for us in the telling of the event that; “…The young man who had died was a widow’s only son,” and the Holy Spirit quickly reminded me of another very familiar passage in the Bible: For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, the passage in Luke 7 goes on to share with us that after Jesus brings this “only son” back to life that… people were saying; “God has visited his people today.”  – and as I close my Bible reflecting on “his one and only Son”… yes; “God has visited his people today!”
